Toddler Struck, Killed by Van in N.J.

A tragic accident happened on Thursday afternoon in Lakewood, N.J. Authorities say a two-year-old child was struck and killed by a van, according to the Asbury Park Press.

Details of the Fatal Van Accident

  • The child was walking home with her father and four-year-old sister from a play group held at 307 Eleventh St. when the accident happened.
  • A van driven by a parent arriving to pick up a child struck and killed the two-year-old girl.
  • Police described the driver of the van as very distraught.
  • The toddler’s body was taken to Monmouth Medical Center’s Southern campus.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recorded 1,168 children aged 14 and under who were killed in traffic-related accidents. Those child fatalities represented 3% of all traffic-related fatalities in the U.S. Children aged 14 and under also accounted for 55% of the 4,743 pedestrian fatalities in 2012. 58% of those children were males.
