Toyota Motor Corp. announced Wednesday a worldwide recall affecting 6.4 million vehicles. The recall covers five separate defects and spans 27 Toyota models. Some models are affected by more than one defect, says USA Today.

About the Toyota Recall

Approximately 2.34 million of the 6.4 million vehicles recalled by Toyota on Wednesday are in the United States. The automaker has said there are five different issues that span the entire recall. No crashes or deaths have been linked to any of the problems, but Toyota has said it is aware of two fires caused by defective starters.

The announcement of the latest Toyota recall follows shortly after the automaker settled for $1.2 billion with the U.S. Department of Justice as part of criminal investigations into the 2012 unintended acceleration recall.

It also comes a week after General Motor’s CEO Mary Barra testified before two Congressional committees investigating why it took the company over a decade to recall vehicles with defective ignition switches. The Wall Street Journal notes the Toyota settlement and GM investigation demonstrate a “shift by the U.S. government toward dealing with auto safety issues as potential criminal matters.”

Five Separate Defects

The different problems affecting the recalled Toyotas, as provided by USA Today:

  • Driver airbag module cables can be damaged causing the airbag to become disabled. A warning light will come on to alert drivers. Approximately 3.5 million vehicles; 1.67 million in the U.S.
  • Seats don’t lock into place. Approximately 2.32 million vehicles; 670,000 in North America.
  • Steering column brackets can become loose or fail. Approximately 760,000 in Europe and Asia only.
  • Windshield wiper motor. Approximately 160,000 in Asia only.
  • Starter motor fire hazard. Approximately 20,000 in Asia only.
