Toyota Recalls Sienna minivans, Lexus GS 350

Tina Robinson2 years ago

In the wake of the massive GM ignition recall earlier this year, automakers have increased efforts to be proactive about potential safety issues with vehicles. The result is near-daily announcements of vehicle recalls. The most recent announcement came from Toyota today that the company was issuing two separate recalls and a “non-compliance” report for several of its vehicles, according to USA Today.

Description of the Sienna Recall

Toyota is recalling approximately 370,000 Sienna minivans with model year 2004-2011 because the spare tire mounted underneath the vehicles can corrode and cause the tire to fall off. The recall covers vehicles sold in cold-weather states which use salt mixtures to de-ice roads in the winter. That salt mixture can cause corrosion on the mounting mechanism.

In April 2010 Toyota issued a recall for the 2004-2010 Sienna for the same issue. At the time, a splash shield was installed and rust-inhibitor applied to the underneath of the vehicles. Toyota now says some of those shields may have been installed improperly, and the rust-inhibitor may be ineffective.

Description of the Lexus GS 350 Recall

Toyota is also recalling approximately 10,500 Lexus GS 350 from the 2013 model-year because the car may suddenly and without driver action apply the brakes without illuminating the brake lights.

Description of the Highlander Non-Compliance Report

In an action that Toyota says is not a recall but a “non-compliance” report, the automaker says dealers will need to reprogram the software in the 2014 Highlander and Highlander hybrid. The company says the system can misidentify all front seat passengers as small and light causing airbags to deploy with less force than necessary.

Toyota has said it is unaware of any crashes or injuries related to any of the three issues.
