Train Collision Occurs in Downtown Texarkana

Texarkana authorities responded to the scene of a train collision early Tuesday morning.

About the Train Collision

According to KTBS 3 News, two trains collided in downtown Texarkana, derailing one locomotive and pushing four cars off the tracks. Fortunately, no major injuries were reported.

The accident occurred around 12:40 a.m. near the viaduct and Phenie Street.  Texarkana local Fire Chief Eric Schlotter stated that the driver engineer of one Union Pacific train was treated for minor injuries and released at the scene by emergency personnel. 

Immediately following the crash, AEP SWEPCO arrived to repair power poles that were damaged and torn down. 

Train Accident Statistics

The following information was provided by the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA):

  • A total of 6,077 train accidents were recorded in 2014, resulting in 379 fatalities and 4,348 injuries.
  • Train accident involving vehicles made up only 1,144 of those incidents, but accounted for 137 fatalities.
  • Only three railroad employee fatalities were recorded in 2014.
