Jasmine Roziers2 years ago

Investigators have determined that a fatal train fire was caused when an electrified rail pierced a Metro-North train during Tuesdays accident.

About the New York Train Wreck

According to Reuters, investigators have discovered that over a hundred feet of electrified rails pierced through parts of the train.

The first two carriages of the train were pierced, while the third one was not. Robert Sumwalt, a member of the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) spoke during a press conference about the accident and he states, “This third rail is just basically piling up inside that first train car.”

Reports show that the fire was caused by the fuel leaking from the train's fuel tank. In the most tragic train wreck in years, five passengers on the train died and 15 were injured.

The sixth victim was Ellen Brody, the woman who's Mercedes Benz was stuck parked on the train tracks. Police are still investigating why Brody's car was stuck on the train tracks.

Train Accident Statistics

  • Collisions at grade crossings in the United States have declined by more than 40 percent to 2,091 in 2013, from 3,502 at the turn of the century, according to data compiled by the Association of American Railroads and the FRA.
  • Some 650 passengers regularly take the 5:44 train, which carries commuters through some of country's wealthiest suburbs.
  • The crash appeared to be the deadliest rail accident in the New York area since March 1982.
  • In a March 2014 report to the U.S. Congress, the FRA criticized the nation's second-largest railroad for a “poor safety culture” and “ineffective training”.
