The two men who died in a trench collapse on Tuesday have finally been identified.

Details about the Trench Collapse on Tuesday

KWCH News is reporting that James Jacobs and Aaron Pfannenstiel were trapped and killed when a trench collapsed around them on Tuesday in Hays, Kansas.

Crews took two hours to remove their bodies from the collapsed trench. One of the other workers who was trapped was able to be rescued.

At this time, there are still road signs blocking off the area where crews are investigating the accident. A witness that was in the area at the time of the collapse said that she was able to hear people screaming and crying when the accident happened.

The woman goes on to say that she can imagine how difficult it must be for other workers to continue working in the area knowing what recently happened there. Investigators were continuing to work on the investigation until Wednesday.

Important Information about On-the-Job Accidents

The Occupational Health and Safety Administration indicates that there are thousands of wrongful deaths every year that take place on-the-job:

  • There were a total of 4,679 workers who were killed on-the-job in 2014.
  • Eliminating the four most deadly forms of on-the-job injuries (falls, electrocutions, being hit by an object, being stuck in/between something) would save the lives of 508 workers in the United States every year.
  • On average, there were about 13 on-the-job deaths every day in the United States in 2014.
