The man who was allegedly behind the wheel of the truck that hit then 17-year-old Christian Carillo in March 2013 is preparing to go to trial.

About the Trucking Accident and Trial

Jury selection began Monday for the trial of Eric Acevedo, who is charged with failing to stop and render aid in a hit-and-run incident that left Carillo hospitalized. Acevedo could face up to ten years in prison if convicted.

According to investigators, Acevedo hit Carillo while the young man walked home from work. Days after the accident, Acevedo and his attorney turned over his vehicle to police, reports KIII in Corpus Christi.

Acevedo’s trial is set to begin Tuesday.

Number of Texas Motor Vehicle Deaths in Recent Years

Statistics from the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) suggest auto accident-related deaths are on the rise in Texas:

  • 2015 (first six months): 1,643
  • 2014: 3,534
  • 2013: 3,408
  • 2012: 3,417
  • 2011: 3,015
  • 2010: 2,998

According to StreetsBlog USA, the state of Texas has led the nation in number of traffic deaths with at least one traffic death per day for the past 15 years.

Even with the Texas Department of Transportation’s  #EndTheStreak campaign, statewide traffic deaths increased 3.7 percent in 2014 from 2013. The TxDOT reports on average someone is injured every two minutes and someone is killed every two and a half hours.

In Texas, hit-and-run, also know as leaving the scene of an accident, is a criminal charge punishable by up to ten years in prison. Depending on the severity of the accident, the offense can range from a misdemeanor to a felony.
