Trial Begins for Fort Worth Drunk Driving Teen
The trial has begun for a Texas teen involved in a fatal drunk driving accident that killed four and left two others critically injured.
About the Fort Worth Drunk Driving Accident
Several families were affected by the tragic Father’s Day accident in which driver Ethan Couch, 16, smashed into a stranded vehicle and several pedestrians who were attempting to aid the stranded motorist.
Among those killed were youth pastor Brian Jennings and 24-year-old Brianna Mitchell. Jennings had stopped to aid Brianna after her tire blew out along Burleson-Retta Road.
Hollie and Shelby Boyles, a 52 year-old mother and her 21-year-old daughter, were also killed in the collision as they attempted to help Brianna who had stopped outside their home.
Drunk Driving Trial Begins
Wednesday, Ethan Couch admitted to causing the tragic accident, and it is now up to Judge Jean Boyd to decide the teen’s sentence which could range from 1 year of in-patient treatment to 20 years in jail.
According to a CBS affiliate, an investigation determined that Couch had a blood alcohol content that was over three times the legal limit and also had valium in his system at the time of the accident.
Expert testimony suggests that Couch was still accelerating over 70 mph when he struck Brianna’s vehicle and the group of pedestrians. Brianna’s mother, Marla Mitchell, was also called to the stand during which time she emotionally recalled coming across her daughter’s mangled body.
Additional testimony portrayed Couch as uncooperative and even belligerent after the accident, claiming that he didn’t have to answer any questions, walking away from emergency crews and attempting to leave the scene.
The defense plans to argue for probation claiming that Couch’s substance abuse is the result of a dysfunctional home life and parents who failed to set boundaries and supervise their son.
