Trial Begins for San Antonio Drunk Driver

Destiny Baker3 years ago

San Antonio motorist Frances Rosalez Ford, 40, took the stand Wednesday to ask a Bexar County jury for leniency after admitting to a drunk driving accident that killed another driver.

Convicted Drunk Driver Claims to be “Driving Right”

  • According to the San Antonio Express-News, Ford faces five years to life in prison after pleading guilty to murder in connection to a fatal drunk driving collision along a San Antonio highway three years ago that left one man dead.
  • In her testimony, Ford asked for leniency claiming that, though she was driving the wrong way along U.S. 281, she feels like she was “driving right” – later clarifying that she was not weaving in and out of traffic.
  • Further, she alleged that had the other driver, Lawrence Vigier Belcher, 38, not been drinking as well, the auto accident would have never occurred.
  • In a toxicology report, Ford was shown to have a blood-alcohol content of .279 percent an hour after the crash – more than three times the legal limit.
  • The prosecution brought murder charges against Ford instead of manslaughter as it was determined that Ford had caused the accident while committing another felony – her think DWI offense.

Texas Drunk Driving Statistics

  • According to the Century Council, a total of 1213 drunk driving fatalities were recorded in Texas in 2011.
  • Drunk driving accidents accounted for 40 percent of all traffic fatalities reported in the state.
  • 70 percent of all alcohol-impaired driving fatalities involved a driver with blood alcohol content above .15 percent.
