Tropical Storm Don to Make Landfall
“Along the coast, storm surge is often the greatest threat to life and property from a hurricane,” according to the National Hurricane Center. The Corpus Christi police department has issued two separate warnings– for flooding and hazardous beach conditions- in preparation for the landfall of Tropical Storm Don.
According to the Corpus Christi Police Department (CCPD), Tropical Storm Don is expected to bring anywhere from 1 to 4 inches of rain over the next few days. The following intersections are prone to flooding:
- Kostoryz @ SPID
- Everhart @ SPID
- Staples @ SPID
- Rodd Field @ SPID
- Waldron @ SPID
- Port Ave @ Crosstown
- Leopard @ Crosstown
- IH 37 @ Tuloso Road
Hazardous beach conditions
“Tropical storms commonly bring strong rip currents and hazardous beach conditions. All residents are asked to follow official warnings and guidelines. Please understand that ignoring these guidelines could result in injury or death,” CCPD Citizen Alert.
Storm Surge and Storm Tide
According to the National Hurricane Center (NHC), storm surge is an abnormal rise of water generated by a storm, over and above the predicted astronomical tides. Storm tide is defined as a water level rise due to the combination of storm surge and the astronomical tide. Storm surge and storm tide can be very dangerous to people and property.
While tropical storm surge is always a potential threat, inland flooding causes more deaths. According to NHC, some of the greatest rainfall amounts occur from weaker storms that drift slowly or stall over an area; rainfall is generally heaviest with storms moving less than 10 mph.
