According to WFTV, the tractor-trailer driver responsible for a hit-and-run accident that left a deaf couple dead has turned himself in.

Details of the Tractor-Trailer Pedestrian Accident

  • Mariah King and Vincent Matthews, were hit and killed after dusk on October 7th while changing a tire on the northbound lane of the Florida Turnpike.
  • The couple was struck by a tractor-trailer that veered of the road.
  • The truck driver, Rober Bates, fled from the scene, turning himself in days later.
  • Bates now faces charges for the deaths of King and Matthews, 19 and 24, and potentially faces a third-degree felony if it is determined that he made any alterations to his truck following the accident.
  • An image of Bates’ truck taken at a toll booth and released to WFTV reveals that the front right bumper had a visible and large dent.
  • Bates attorney has advised him not to give a statement as authorities continue to investigate.

Pedestrian Accident Statistics

  • Data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that 4,280 pedestrians were killed in 2010 from traffic-related vehicle crashes.
  • This translates to a loss of human life every 2 hours in the United States from a vehicle-related pedestrian incident.
  • An additional 70,000 pedestirans are injured every year, about one pedestrian every eight minures.
