The Dallas Morning News is reporting that two children were attempting to cross the road on Tuesday when they were involved in a two-car accident.

Details about the child Pedestrian Accident

The Dallas police have said that the accident happened at around 4:30 p.m., when five children, all between the ages of 10 and 12, ran out into the street in front of a car on Kelly Boulevard near Frankford Road.

The driver of the car was able to stop in time to avoid hitting the children, but the car was stuck by another vehicle from behind, which pushed it forward and cause it to hit all five children.

One of the children was taken to a local hospital after sustaining non-life threatening injuries, according to police. Jason Evans, a spokesman from the Dallas Fire-Rescue, indicated that another child was taken to a nearby hospital, but the condition of that child was not currently available.

Neither of the drivers in the cars that were involved were taken to the hospital.

Important Information about Child Pedestrians

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC):

  • There were a total of 4,743 pedestrians who were killed in traffic accidents in the United States in 2012.
  • In 2012, a little bit more than one in every five children between the ages of 5 and 15 who were killed in traffic accidents were pedestrians.
  • Parents who responded to a research question about walking to school by the CDC said that the primary reason more children don’t walk to school is because of distance and because of the dangers of traffic.
