Two Critically Injured by Cement Truck Rollover in Corpus Christi

Emergency crews in Corpus Christi responded to a serious traffic accident on Tuesday afternoon after an accident involving a cement truck and three other vehicles left two people critically injured, according to Kiii TV.

About the Corpus Christi Cement Truck Accident

Authorities told reporters the accident happened at approximately 11 a.m. on Tuesday afternoon along South Padre Island Drive at Everhart Road. A cement truck was headed east on SPID when it experienced a tire blowout. The truck proceeded to crash through two concrete barriers and collided with three vehicles in westbound lanes.

A total of five people were hospitalized following the crash, including two people who sustained what was described as critical injuries. Emergency workers had to use the Jaws of Life to extricate people from two of the vehicles. In addition to the five people taken by ambulance to area hospitals, two people were treated at the scene for minor injuries.

Sections of SPID were closed until about 3:30 p.m. Tuesday afternoon as workers cleaned up concrete from the highway and repaired the median barriers.

  • Of those fatalities, 523 were the result of head-on collisions.
  • About 460 traffic fatalities involved distracted driving.
  • Crashes involving drivers under the influence of alcohol caused 1,089 fatalities.
