Two Injured in Corpus Christi Accident

Two men have been hospitalized following two related auto accidents on South Padre Island Drive in Corpus Christi, Texas early Sunday morning.

About the Corpus Christi Accident

According to KRIS-TV, the chain of events began when a group of men decided to cross SPID on foot after leaving the Pelican Lounge, near Verdemar Drive. One of the men was struck by a van as the group attempted to cross the street.

A Corpus Christi Police Officer who came upon the scene while transporting a prisoner stopped to provide aid; however, his patrol car was rear-ended by a another vehicle, injuring the prisoner.

Both the pedestrian and the prisoner were transported to the hospital for treatment. The pedestrian was listed in critical condition – the condition of the prisoner was not released.

Neither driver has been cited in the two accidents, but both collisions remain under investigation.

  • In 2013, there were 3,377 traffic related fatalities recorded in Texas – a 1.05-percent decrease from 2012 when 3,413 fatalities were recorded.
  • Pedestrian fatalities accounted for 485 deaths.
  • Another 232,041 people were injured in auto accidents with 89,270 people suffering serious injuries.
  • TxDOT estimates that a person was killed in an auto accident in Texas every 2 hours and 36 minutes.
