Two Injured in Minn. Work Zone Accident

Minnesota State Patrol is investigating an accident that occurred on Sunday in Burnsville, Minn. According to CBS Minnesota, two workers were injured in the crash.

About the Burnsville Work Zone Accident

Authorities told CBS reporters the accident happened on Sunday afternoon along northbound I-35W. Two workers with the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) were setting out traffic cones for lane closures when a 2002 Hyundia Elantra struck their truck. MnDOT has said the lane closure was in order to build a dike to prevent flooding.

The MnDOT workers have been identified as Dennis Scott, 57 of Rockford and Ronald McReid, 43 of Champlin. Both men were taken to area hospitals for treatment. Scott was reported as sustaining non-life-threatening injuries; McReid is reported as sustaining serious injuries.

The driver of the Hyundai has been identified as a 25-year-old man from Mound, Minn. He was not injured in the collision.

  • Of all 2012 crashes, 3,837 were alcohol-related. Additionally, 131 fatalities and 2,644 injuries were alcohol-related.
  • Traffic fatalities in Minnesota increased by 7.3 percent from 2011 to 2012.
