Two Killed in Fiery Tractor-Trailer Collision

Two people are dead in Smith County, Texas after two tractor-tailors collided.

Details of the Smith County Trucking Accident

On Wednesday night around 11:00 p.m., several fire departments responded to the accident just west of FM 2015. The crash occurred when one tractor-trailer rear-ended a second, causing a large explosion and fire and killing two people, according to Red Springs Fire Marshal, Michael Salmon.

According to CBS 19, the victims were both riding in the tailor that rear-ended the other and were employees of UPS.

UPS confirmed that the deceased were UPS employees conducting a long-haul movement.

Tractor-Trailer Accident Statistics

The following information was provided by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA):

  • Of the approximately 317,000 police-reported crashes involving large trucks in 2012, 3,464 (1 percent) resulted in at least one fatality, and 73,000 (23 percent) resulted in at least one nonfatal injury.
  • Single-vehicle crashes made up 21 percent of all fatal crashes, 15 percent of all injury crashes, and 22 percent of all property damage only crashes involving large trucks in 2012. The majority (63 percent) of fatal large truck crashes involved two vehicles. 
  • Almost two-thirds (63 percent) of all fatal crashes involving large trucks occurred on rural roads, and 24 percent occurred on rural and urban Interstate highways.
