Two police officers from Des Moines were killed in a wrong-way accident over the weekend.

Details about the Fatal Officer-Involved Accident

Multiple sources are reporting that two police officers from Des Moines were among four people who were killed in a wrong-way accident that happened over the weekend while they were returning a prisoner in their squad car from Council Bluffs to Des Moines, according to police.

The officers were traveling east when they were hit head-on by a vehicle going the wrong way on Interstate 80 at around 12:40 a.m. The prisoner in the vehicle and the driver of the other vehicle were killed in the accident.

The two police officers who were killed in the accident have been identified as 34-year-old Officer Carlos Puente Morales and 30-year-old Officer Susan Farrell. Both of the officers had graduated from the Des Moines Regional Police Academy in October of 2015.

At this time, police have not released the names of the other two victims in the accident, which is currently being investigated.

  • There was a significant increase in the number of deaths due to traffic accidents in the line of duty in 2010.
  • In 2010, 73 police officers died in traffic accident while on the job.
