TxDOT Holds Impaired Driving Summit

Accordign to the San Antonio Express-News, the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) held the Texas Impaired Driving Summit last week to discuss the prevention of alcohol related accidents.

About The Impaired Driving Summit

The Texas Impaired Driving Summit was held on November 4th in San Antonio, Texas. State law enforcement officials and safety experts were in attendance to discuss Texas’ high rate of drunk driving accidents.

The summit was held before the holiday season which sees an increase in car accidents, usually involving intoxicated drivers.

According to the National Highway and Safety Administration, Texas leads the nation in alcohol related fatalities. Drunk driving accidents account for 1,296 deaths every year.

Sean Carter, whose story is featured on the Faces of Drunk Driving campaign, was in attendance. Sometime in 2005, Carter was involved in an alcohol related accident as a passenger. He sustained injuries that left him in a wheelchair and unable to speak. At the time, Carter was only 22 years old.

Texas Auto Accident Statistics

The following information was provided by the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT):

3,377 people were injured in auto accidents in 2013, marking a 1.05-percent decrease from the 3,413 deaths recorded in 2012.
232,041 people were injured in auto accidents with 89,270 people suffering a serious injury.
32.2 percent of those injured in auto accidents were under the influence of alcohol at the time of the collision.
