TxDOT Initiates Work Zone Awareness Campaign

Destiny Baker2 years ago

As part of Work Zone Awareness Week, the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) has initied their “Drive Safe in Work Zones So We All Get Home” call-to-action.

About the Work Zone Campaign

According to the Humble Observer, the role of the campaign is to educate drivers on the risks of driving irresponsibly in work zones and urge motorists to take extra caution when driving through work zones and construction areas.

The campaign comes after a spike in work zone crashes, jumping 18 percent from 2013 to 2014.

TxDOT states that the top two factors in work zone collisions are lack of driver attention and speeding. These continue to be issues despite traffic fines doubling when workers are present in a work zone.

During the campaing, TxDOT will create permanent signs along Texas roadways reminding drivers to be attentive when entering work zones.

Texas Work Zone Accident Statistics

  • TxDOT recorded 19,393 work zone crashes in 2013 resulting in 146 deaths – up 20 percent from 2012.
  • 87 percent of those killed in work zone crashes were motorists.
  • At any given time, 2,500 work zones are active in Texas.
