According to CBS,exas has been ranked as the third-highest state for cyclist deaths. The members of Tyler Bicycle Club Ride are strategizing to change these statistics.

About the Bicycle Accidents

About nine weeks ago, a woman named Kristin Blaise was hit by an SUV while she was participating in a Tyler Bicycle Club Ride. As a result of the accident, she broke 12 bones including her back, pelvis, and hip.

Kristin is viewing her recovery process as a way to teach others. “If that's why I was left here, that's what I will do. Sometimes I wonder why I got left, it wasn't a given. It was a pretty bad accident,” Blaise said.

Local Police Officer of Tyler, Texas, Don Martin says that changing the bicycle accident and death statistics needs to be accomplished by a cooperative effort between drivers and cyclists.

Bicycle Accident Reform Methods

Bicyclists should wear bright clothing and use lights and drivers should pay more attention to their surroundings while on the road. “The gentlemen who hit me, he made a mistake. If we can get focused on driving while we're driving, I think that's a huge thing for us to do,” Blaise said.

Tyler Bicycle Club is making plans to educate youth about bicycle safety methods in driver’s education classes.

During the last six years, there has only been one bicycle death in Tyler.  In Smith and Gregg counties, there have been nine fatal bicycle accidents since 2009.
