One man is dead after two 18-wheelers collided along State Highway 31 in Tyler, Texas.

Details of the Fatal Accident

Steven Wayne Richter, 55, died early Tuesday morning when his truck collided with another 18-wheeler on State Highway 31, resulting in a fiery crash.

Tyler police, fire and EMS units were dispatched to Texas 31 near the intersection of Spur 64 just before 5 a.m. Tuesday. A caller had reported a crash and fire involving two truck 18-wheelers.

The two trucks were travelling westbound in parallel lanes next to each other, when the truck in the outside lane veered into the next lane and collided with the truck that Richter was driving, according to Tyler police Officer Don Martin.

Martin said investigators determined later in the day that the collision occurred when the driver in the first truck made a U-turn to head west. Richter’s truck was pushed into the grassy medium when the first truck hit the back of the cab of Richter’s truck. Richter’s truck then caught on fire and the cab was quickly engulfed in flames, Martin said.

The driver of the other truck was unable to reach Richter due to the intensity of the fire. The other driver was taken to a hospital and suffered minor injuries, according to police.

According to Tyler police, Richter drove for Con-way Freight. Con-way Freight is headquartered in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and has regional offices in Waco and Hewitt.
