U.S. Marshalls Seize Pest-Infested Food
U.S. Marshalls have seized all FDA-regulated food from a Durham, North Carolina food warehouse due to rodent infestation and unsanitary conditions. At the request of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the products were seized from the CFSD, Inc. warehouse under a warrant issued by the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of North Carolina. CFSD, Inc., which does business as Chan's Food Service, reportedly distributes food to restaurants and other businesses in three states.
“According to the government’s complaint, the products are adulterated under the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act, because they have been held under insanitary conditions whereby they may have become contaminated by filth,” FDA news release.
An FDA inspection which took place from July 25, 2011 through Aug. 3, 2011 found evidence of “an active and widespread rodent infestation in [the company's] warehouse.” Inspectors found:
- rodent nesting sites
- rodent pellets on and around food products
- rodent gnawed containers of food
- one live and eight dead rodents near the food product storage
- open boxes of food
- food product spills
- rotten food items
- trash throughout the facility
- several potential entryways for pests
