U.S. Regulators: Fiat Had Recall Failings

Federal regulators investigating Fiat believe the company may have mishandled a recall for 11 million vehicles.

According to Reuters, U.S. auto safety regulators have “tentatively concluded” that Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV did not properly fix the safety defects in the time they were supposed to fix them.

Additionally, they did not notify car owners of the recalls or inform federal officials on ongoing issues.

Fiat Chrysler could be charged with $700 million in fines in addition to having to buy back or replace vehicles. 

Facts about the Fiat Recall

  • The recall involves 11 million cars and trucks.
  • The vehicles involved include the 1.5 million Jeep Liberty, Jeep Grand Cherokee SUVs. 
  • The recall occurred in June 2013 in order to reduce the risk of fire in rear-end collisions
  • By April 30, 2015, only 21% of the cars had been fixed.
