UC-Berkeley Faces Lawsuit from Former Students

Brian Hendricks1 year ago

According to Reuters, the University of California-Berkeley is being sued by three former students. The three female students filed the lawsuit in response to alleged sexual assaults that they experienced at the university.

About the Sexual Assault Lawsuit

The former students claim that they were sexually assaulted while enrolled at UC-Berkeley in 2012. The girls say they reported the attack to school officials; however, university authorities did not provide sufficient protection to the victims.

The lawsuit cites a federal regulation, Title IX, which does not allow for gender discrimination at federally-funded institutions. The official complaint says that the girls did not receive an equal educational opportunity since they did not receive the necessary attention after the alleged sexual assault.

The U.S. Department of State is currently investigating 55 colleges across the country, including the University of California-Berkeley. The investigations are meant to examine whether schools are meeting the protocol laid out by Title IX.

National College Sexual Assault Statistics

The following information has been provided by the National Sexual Violence Resource Center:

  • About 20% of college women will be sexually assaulted at some point during their college career
  • 90% of women knew their offender
  • 22% of victims have been raped more than once
  • Less than 5% of rape victims reported the incident to law enforcement
