Ultrasound Gel Recall- Bacteria Contamination
Pharmaceutical Innovations Inc. has recalled its “Other-Sonic Generic Ultrasound Transmission Gels” due to a bacterial contamination found in the product. So far, Food and Drug Administration (FDA) officials have received 16 reports of patients being affected by bacteria found in the product.
Product Recall Information
- The ultrasound gel was found to be contaminated with the bacteria Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Klebsiella oxytoca.
- Both bacteria can severely infect organs. Exposure can lead to: general infection, skin infection (inflammatory dermatitis), pneumonia, tracheobronchitis, sepsis and other wound and bloodstream infections.
- The gels may be used in a variety of ultrasound procedures- both internal and external.
