Victim of Cotulla Drilling Fire Dies

One of the men injured last month in a South Texas drilling rig fire has died from his injuries.

About the Drilling Rig Fire

KWTX reports 50-year-old Roel Rodriguez was among five workers injured last month when a drilling rig burst into falmes.

The men were working at a site about 20 miles east of Cotulla on October 24 when the fire began. Rodriguez suffered serious burn injuries and was rushed to San Antonio Military Medical Center for treatment – he died Saturday.

The conditions of the other workers involved were not immediately available.

  • 823 oil and gas extraction workers were killed on the job between 2003 and 2010.
  • The fatality rate for the oil and gas extraction injury is seven times greater than all other U.S. industries.

    • Vehicle accidents
    • Struck by object
    • Caught in/between
    • Explosions and fires
    • Falls
    • Confined spaces
    • Chemical exposure
