Volkswagen Issues Massive Recall Due to Airbag Defect

According to USAToday, Volkswagen has issued a nationwide recall for 420,000 vehicles equipped with defective airbags.

About the Volkswagen Airbag Recall

The defect is caused by a faulty spring in the steering wheel assembly which can rip the cable that controls the connection to the front airbags. If the cable became ripped, the airbags will not deploy in a in the event of a collision.

Owners of VW vehicles should be keeping an eye out for a warning light for the airbag, as this will indicate if the car has the defect.

  • 2010-2014 Volkswagen CC
  • 2010-2014 Passat
  • 2010-2014 Tiguan
  • 2010-2013 Eos
  • 2010-2013 Jetta
  • 2011-2014 Golf
  • 2011-2014 GTI
  • 2011-2013 Jetta Sportwagen

Airbag Failure Statistics

The following information was provided by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA):

  • 576 deaths were linked to airbag non-deployments between 2001 and 2006.
  • NHTSA determined that airbag would have benefitted the deceased in 360 of those accidents.
  • NHTSA’s Fatality Analysis Reporting Systems noted that airbags failed to properly deploy in 18 percent of fatal frontal collisions between 1998 and 2006.
