Detroit News reports Volkswagen AG has issued a recall for 20,676 minivans for ignition switch issues that could cause the air bags to fail to deploy in case of a crash.

Volkswagen Recall Information

  • Recall involves 20,000 Routan 2009-10 minivans built for it by Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV.
  • Reason being that conditions or some other “jarring” event may cause the ignition switch to move out of the run position.
  • Volkswagen suggests owners remove all items from their key rings, leaving only the ignition key.

Additional Safety Information

In March, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said it was closing the investigation into the Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV’s recall.

This decision comes after the Fiat Chrysler told the agency in February it will replace Continental ignition-switch modules, along with the key fobs, with Marquardt modules.

Last year, a similar recall resulted in General Motors being the subject of multiple congressional hearings as lawmakers attempted to determine the best course of action for handling the recall. 84 deaths have been linked to the faulty ignition switches used by GM..
