Volvo Recalls 2016 XC90 – Airbag Problems

Patrick Murray1 year ago

Volvo Cars of North America has issued a recall of their 2016 Volvo XC90 SUV because of a defect with the third row side curtain airbags.

This is the fifth recall this year for Volvo, and the second for the XC90. The first XC90 recall this year was also issued due to an airbag defect.

About the Volvo XC90 Recall

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Safety (NHTSA) Recall Report, in XC90 vehicles equipped with seven seats, the inflatable curtain air bags may not deploy correctly.

The defect arises from the fact that interior trim panel on the D-pillars could obstruct the airbags from fully inflating. This poses a risk of injury and even death for third row passengers in the event of a collision.

The recall covers 3,911 XC90s manufactured between January 27th and July 10th of 2015. The Vehicle Identification Numbers range from YV1LCA2BCG1000491 to YV4A22PK9G1020394. The recall is expected to take effect on September 14th.

So far there have been no reports of injuries, crashes, or fatalities connected with the defect.

Airbag Failure Statistics

  • According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), 523 deaths were linked to airbag non-deployments between 2001 and 2006.
  • According to their report, airbags would have benefitted at least 360 of those killed.
  • Incorrect airbag deployment occurred in 18 percent of fatal frontal collisions between 1998 and 2006.
