VW Beetles Recalled for Child Safety Concerns

Gabrielle Babb4 years ago

Volkswagen (VW) is recalling close to 2,471 of its Beetle coupes (model years 2012 and 2013) due to airbag safety hazards which could pose a threat to children.

Front Passenger Airbag May Deploy on Child

According to a recent article in USA Today, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration found that in affected Beetle vehicles, a sensor in the right front seat may fail to detect the presence of a child’s seat in certain situations.

According to the reports, the occupant control module has a sensor that is supposed to be able to detect a child’s seat, and as a result turn off the airbag. If the seat becomes wet the sensor may fail, resulting in a deployed airbag upon crashing. If the airbag is deployed it is highly likely that it will injure the child in the seat. However, it is important to note that the proper location for a child’s seat is in the rear of the vehicle.

VW will be replacing the defective module; however the recall schedule has not yet been determined.
