Winter Weather Safety Tips From the VA State Police

Jonathan Hernandez8 months ago

Police are advising that drivers use extreme caution while driving in winter weather conditions in the Richmond area.

Details about the Police Warnings

WRIC News is reporting that on Wednesday morning, ice and snow wreaked havoc on commuters in Richmond when the untreated roads caused about 100 accidents throughout the region. All of the lanes on multiple roadways were closed during parts of the morning commute that caused backups and additional accidents.

All lanes on the 295 North in Henrico County were closed due to a crash during Wednesday morning’s rush hour. Another accident just south of the Boulevard on Interstate 95North shut down all the lanes and caused a backup nearly 10 miles long.

Between 4:30 a.m. and 9 a.m., Virginia State Police responded to at least 60 crashes in the Richmond Metro Area alone. No serious injuries have been reported to have been a result in any of the accidents.

The Virginia State Police give the following advice should you encounter a patch of black ice:

  • Slow down
  • Don’t slam on the brakes
  • Keep the steering wheel steady and try not to overcorrect
  • Take your driving foot off the accelerator

Drivers in the Richmond Metro Area are advised to take even more caution on bridges and overpasses where freezing water is more like to collect and form black ice.
