Woman Critically Hurt in Charlotte Police Chase

The Charlotte Observer is reporting a woman critically injured after being run over by a stolen vehicle that was involved in a police chase in Charlotte, NC on Monday.

Details of the Police Pursuit

  • Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police say at about 4 p.m. on I-85 near Little Rock Road, an officer spotted a Mazda 3 that had been reported stolen.
  • The officer, C.M. Greene, says he turned on his lights but the Mazda drove away. Greene turned off his lights and did not engage in pursuit.
  • Moments later, an unidentified N.C. Highway Patrol officer spotted the Mazda and pulled behind the vehicle in an attempt to stop the driver.
  • The Mazda slowed to 20-25 mph when the passenger door opened, and a woman fell from the vehicle. The Mazda then struck the woman as it fled from officers.
  • Police pursued the vehicle along I-85 to I-485 where the driver exited at Brookshire Blvd and crashed into a pole.

Woman Critically Injured

The woman injured in the pursuit was taken to a nearby hospital where she is listed in critical condition. Police have not released her identity.

Officers also arrested the driver of the Mazda, identified as Willie Wright, 27 of Rock Hill. Wright has been charged with multiple counts including felony speed to elude, felony hit and run causing serious injury, possession of a stolen car, driving 130 mph in a 65 mph zone, and other misdemeanors. Wright is scheduled to appear in court on Wednesday.
