The family of a Corpus Christi woman who was seriously injured in an accident involving a cement truck eight days ago is turning to the community for help.

About the Cement Truck Accident

KRIS-TV reports that Melinda Herrera was on her way to work on June 1 when she was involved in a four car pile-up.

The accident occurred when a cement truck traveling eastbound on South Padre Island Drive experienced a tire blowout. The truck then crashed through two concrete barriers and veered into the westbound lanes and oncoming traffic.

The truck collided head-on into Herrera’s SUV, smashing the vehicle against a concrete divider.

Herrera sustained eight broken ribs and underwent major surgery on her spine. According to her daughter Monica, Herrera has no feeling in her legs and is currently wheelchair bound.

Herrera’s family and co-workers are raising money to help build a wheelchair ramp and other adjustments for her due to her injuries.
