A woman from Pleasant Garden was taken to the hospital after she swerved her car to avoid hitting a deer and ended up crashing her vehicle.

Details about the Accident Involving the Deer

The Dispatch is reporting that a woman from Pleasant Garden was taken to the hospital on Thursday morning via helicopter after she swerved her vehicle to avoid hitting a deer, and then crashed her vehicle while traveling down Cunningham Brick Road.

On Thursday afternoon, the condition of 56-year-old Robin Bias was not immediately available, according to a spokeswoman from the Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem.

Firefighters from the area responded to the scene of the accident at about 8:30 a.m., and the Fair Grove Fire Chief confirmed the driver of the vehicle was a female. Rescue crews took about 15 minutes to free the woman from the wreckage, but it is believed that she sustained non-life threatening injuries in the accident.

There were no signs of impairment in the driver, but it is believed that the woman was speeding at the time of the accident and she has been charged with failure to maintain lane control.

Safety Tips to Avoid Hitting a Deer

Geico offered the following tips to avoid hitting deer on the roadway:

  • Deer are herd animals – watch for the rest of the deer family on the roadway.
  • Deer are most active at dawn and dusk – timing is everything.
  • Always wear your seatbelt.
  • Pay attention to road signs indicating deer activity.
  • Staying in the center lane is the safest way to avoid hitting a deer.
  • If you do see a deer, brake firmly and calmly – always avoid swerving.
  • Honk your horn – one long blast of the horn might scare the deer off the roadway.
