Details about the Fatal Accident in Manhattan

The New York Post is reporting that a 56-year-old woman was hit by a dump truck on the Upper East Side when she attempted to cross the street early Tuesday morning and later died as a result of her injuries.

According to police officials, the accident happened near the intersection of First Avenue and East 92nd Street at around 4:20 a.m. The woman was transported to the New York Presbyterian Hospital with injuries that appeared to be minor, at first, but she died two hours later at the hospital.

The identity of the victim has not been released until her family has been notified of her death. The exact cause of her death has yet to be determined.

When the woman was crossing the street, the driver had a green light but was required to yield to anyone in the crosswalk. According to officials, the driver of the privately owned sanitation truck stayed at the scene of the accident and is not expected to be charged.

Important Information about Pedestrian Accidents

According to the New York City Department of Transportation, the amount of wrongful deaths of pedestrians in the city every year is lower than the rate in the next 10 largest cities in the United States:

  • In New York City, a pedestrian is 10 times more likely to die than an occupant of a motor vehicle in the event of an accident.
  • 43 percent of the pedestrians who were killed in Manhattan lived in other boroughs or outside of the city.
  • 2009 was the safest year for pedestrians on record in New York City history.
