Woman Killed in Detroit Multi-Vehicle Crash

A section of I-96 in Detroit was closed for part of the Wednesday morning commute after a fatal car accident involving four vehicles, according to CBS Detroit. At least one person was killed in the crash.

Initial reports say the accident happened around 4 a.m. on Wednesday on westbound I-96 and Grand River Avenue. Circumstances of the fatal incident are not fully known, but at least four vehicles, including a semi tractor-trailer, are reported to have been involved in the crash.

According to reporters, two of the vehicles sustained front end damage, and a third vehicle “was so mangled, it was unidentifiable.” 

One woman was pronounced dead. The status of the other drivers and any passengers is unknown at this time.

Traffic was shutdown for about four hours while police investigated.

According to the Michigan Office of Highway Safety Planning, in 2012:

  • 936 people were killed and 70,518 people were injured in a total of 273,891 reported motor vehicle crashes.
  • The economic loss as a result of motor vehicle crashes was $8,436,618,800 or $849.50 per Michigan resident.
  • An estimated 29.9% of fatal crashes were alcohol-related.
  • Speed was indicated as a factor in 13.2% of fatal crashes.
