The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) estimates that each year, approximately 15,000 crashes and 100 deaths occur in highway construction and maintenance zones.

According to the Federal Highway Administration, Texas, California, and Florida are the top three states in terms of work zone motor vehicle crash fatalities.

  • More than half of all work zone fatalities in 2010 were drug and alcohol related.

  • According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), from 1995 to 2002, 844 workers were killed while working at roadway construction sites.
