Worker Killed at San Diego Airport Accident Identified

Authorities have identified the man killed at a construction site near the San Diego International Airport, known as Lindbergh Field locally, as 29-year-old Eduardo Lopez.

About the San Diego Construction Accident

Lopez was crushed by a collapsing rebar that he was working with while on the job at a site near the San Diego airport.

Although bystanders called 911 when they heard his yells, emergency crews pronounced him dead at the scene.

Lopez was working for Austin/Sundt Joint Venture, a company currently developing a new rental car center near the San Diego International Airport.

  • Second only to transportation and material-moving occupations, this industry is responsible for nearly a quarter of fatal occupational injuries.
  • According to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), the second leading cause of worker deaths on construction sites is workers being struck by an object.
  • This hazard is responsible for about 10% of fatal injuries. 79 deaths in 2012 resulted from workers being struck by fallen objects, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
