A Florida wrong-way driver was killed in an accident on the turnpike on Monday morning.

Details about the Fatal Wrong-Way Accident

NBC News Miami is reporting that a driver that was headed the wrong way was killed after slamming into a truck on the Turnpike in Broward County early Monday morning.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the accident happened just before 12:30 a.m. near Exit 53 at Griffin Road. The 26-year-old male driver was heading the wrong way on the southbound lanes of the Turnpike in a Hyundai sedan when he slammed directly into an 18-wheeler and the vehicle flipped upside down.

The driver of the wrong-way vehicle was killed at the scene of the accident, and the two passengers inside the 18-wheeler were left uninjured.

Another driver who witnessed the accident says that the driver of the truck tried to swerve out of the way to avoid the crash and hit the rear end of another vehicle. The driver of that vehicle was also not injured.

All lanes of the Turnpike were completely shut down so emergency crews could clear the area, but it has since been reopened.
