Hundreds of thousands of drivers are injured and killed in motor vehicle crashes each year. Unfortunately, a vast number of the victims are youth.

“Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for all 15- to 20-year-olds,” National Center for Health and Data Statistics.

Youth Accident Facts and Statistics

  • In 2010, 1,963 youth (ages 15-20) died and 187,000 were injured in motor vehicle crashes.
  • Another 216 died and 5,000 were injured in motorcycle accidents.
  • 30% of the young motorcyclists who were killed were not wearing helmets.

Teens and Distracted Driving

  • The under 20 age group has the largest proportion of distracted drivers.
  • 11% of all drivers under the age of 20 involved in fatal crashes were reported as distracted at the time of the crash.
  • 40% of all American teens say they have been in a car when the driver used a cell phone in a way that put people in danger.
Youth, Alcohol, and Accidents
  • 30% percent of youth killed in motor vehicle accidents in 2010 had a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of .01or higher.
  • 25% had a BAC of .08 or higher.
  • 71% of all young drunk drivers that were killed were not wearing seatbelts at the time of the accident.
