A ten-year-old girl was killed on Monday when she was hit by a runaway vehicle and tried to push another child out of its path.

Details about the fatal Accident Involving the Girl

10 News is reporting that a 10-year-old girl was hit and killed by a runaway vehicle on a driveway in Lakeside when she pushed another child out of the path of the vehicle on Monday, according to authorities.

At this point, it is not immediately clear why or how the 1999 Mercedes-Benz vehicle that hit the young girl began rolling in reverse down the dirt driveway in the first place. The accident happened off Olde Highway 80 near Los Coches Road just after 5 p.m. on Monday, according to the California Highway Patrol. Reports from other local news outlets indicate that the vehicle may have been put into motion by another child playing in the area.

Officer Kevin Pearlstein of the California Highway Patrol said that the girl pushed anther child out of the way of the oncoming vehicle. While pushing the other child out of the way, she was hit by the car and sustained major injuries.

The girl was taken to Sharp Grassmont Hospital where she later died as a result of her injuries sustained in the accident.

Important Information about Child Pedestrians & Parking Brakes

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC):

  • One in every five children between the ages of 5 and 15 that were killed in traffic accidents in 2012 were pedestrians.

According to Virtual Drive of Texas:

  • A parking brake should be used whenever you park your car – not just on hills.
  • The parking brake is capable of having a stronger hold on the vehicle than just placing the vehicle into “park.”
