World Against Toys Causing Harm (W.A.T.C.H.) has released their list for 10 hazardous toys to avoid buying this holiday season. According to the group, the toys can cause serious injuries to children including choking, strangulation, blunt force trauma, and eye damage.
Nickelodeon Nella Princess Knight Pillow Pets Sleeptime Lites
These toys are used to project night-sky images on walls and ceilings and are marketed as a way to make bedtime more fun. However, W.A.T.C.H. notes that while the toys are marketed as bedtime fun for infants, the packaging actually warns that they are not intended for crib use.
Additionally, other parts may present potential ingestion hazards and the manufacturer warns that “battery acid leakage” could be a hazard.
The toy is sold at major retailers including Target for about $19.99.
Nerf Vortex VTX Praxis Blaster
According to W.A.T.C.H., the Vortex VTX Praxis Blaster from the popular toy manufacturer Nerf launches projectiles with enough force to cause eye and facial injuries.
The Nerf Vortex VTX Praxis Blaster is sold at major retailers for about $34.99.
Marvel Black Panther Slash Claw
The Hasbro toy allows children to emulate the popular Marvel character Black Panther with his signature clawed gloves. However, the packaging notes that children should not hit or swing at people or animals or around breakable objects.
W.A.T.C.H. notes that the toy was marketed to children as young as 5 who may just be tempted to “slash” like the Black Panther.
The product is sold for about $9.99 at retailers nationwide.
Power Rangers Super Ninja Steel Superstar Blade
According to W.A.T.C.H., the packaging for the Super Ninja Steel Superstar Blade warns that users should never hit people with the toy or swing or poke another person with the sword, a warning that will likely be lost on the toy’s intended audience.
Additionally, the spring-loaded plastic blade could cause children to injure themselves or others.
The sword is sold at national retailers for about $29.99.
Cabbage Patch Kids Dance Time Doll
You likely remember Cabbage Patch Kids from your own childhood, making it nostalgic choice for this holiday season. W.A.T.C.H. warns that the headband can detach from the dolls and be ingested by young children.
The Cabbage Patch Kids Dance Time Dolls are sold for about $14.99.
Zoo Jamz Xylophone
The Zoo Jamz Xylophone is recommended for children between the ages of 18 months and 4 years and does not include any warnings. However, W.A.T.C.H. has determined that young children can put the drum stick handle in their mouths, potentially blocking their airway.
The xylophones are sold for about $14.99.
Nici Wonderland Doll: Miniclara the Ballerina
The ballerina doll is marketed for children as young as 2 with no warnings on the package. W.A.T.C.H. has determined that a plush kitten that comes with the doll can detach and pose a choking hazard for children.
The dolls are sold for about $24.99.
Stomp Rocket Ultra Rocket
Marketed to children 6 and up, the Stomp Rocker Ultra Rocket could lead to eye and/or facial inuries.
The rocket stomper works when a kid stomps on an air pad, forcing air into a foam rocket that shoots upward. W.A.T.C.H. notes the toy does include warnings for “serious eye or face injuries.”
The Stomp Rocket Ultra Rocket sells for about $19.99.
The toys is marketed towards children 2 and up and comes with a “slicing knife” made of hard plastic. W.A.T.C.H. says the knife is hard enough to create blunt trauma injuries.
Cutting Fruit is sold for about $39.99.
Chien A Promener Pull Along Dog
The pull toy includes a cord 19 inches in length. Cords any longer than 12 inches have been determined to be strangulation hazards, but product packaging makes no mention of such a hazard.
To make matters worse, the toy is marketed to children as young as 12 months.
The Chien A Promener Pull Along Dog sells for about $14.99.
