Powdered Baby Formulas Recalled: What Parents Should Know
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is advising parents of a large powdered infant formula recall affecting Similac, Alimentum, and EleCare products. The FDA says parents should not use these products due to potential contamination and a risk of dangerous bacterial infection.
Four infants have been hospitalized and resulting infections from the recalled baby formulas may have contributed to two infant deaths.
How Do I Know If My Infant Formula is Recalled?
All the recalled products were produced by Abbott Nutrition at its Sturgis, Michigan facility. The products were distributed across the U.S.
The FDA urges parents to look at lot codes on any Similac, Alimentum, and EleCare powdered infant formulas they have. The lot code is a multidigit number on the bottom of the baby formula containers.
Parents should not use the formula if:
- the first two digits of the lot code are 22 through 37; and
- the code on the container contains K8, SH, or Z2; and
- the formula has an expiration date of 4-1-2022 (APR 2022) or later.
To avoid confusion, parents can also enter the lot code of any formula they have at the company’s website to see if it has been recalled.
What Symptoms or Illnesses Are Being Reported?
So far, all cases linked to the Abbott baby formula recall involve Cronobacter sakazakii infection. Cronobacter bacteria can result in serious, life-threatening infections, sepsis, and meningitis. Newborns are at especially high risk for Cronobacter infections.
Symptoms may include:
- Poor feeding
- Irritability
- Temperature changes
- Jaundice
- Grunting breaths
- Abnormal movements
If you suspect your child is experiencing symptoms of Cronobacter infection, contact your child’s health care provider immediately.
