CORPUS CHRISTI, TX (June 18, 2025)In response to continued delays and political interference in the long-standing naming rights decision for American Bank Center, Thomas J. Henry is calling for greater transparency and urgency in decision-making that directly impacts taxpayers.

The issue at hand has been stalled due to political gridlock and lack of transparency from decision-makers. Despite Thomas J. Henry’s initial proposal, dating back to April 2024, no conclusive action has been taken. The City Council has reviewed the matter, yet no clear path forward has been adopted.

“Watching politicians trying to manipulate and control what should be an open, transparent public process is sad and damaging to the taxpayers. Elections matter,” said Henry. “This should be a simple decision and for some reason, it has lingered on for years. We all, as taxpayers, have to ask the question: Why?”

At the recent City Council meeting on Wednesday, June 10, a non-binding resolution was introduced to express support for the highest bidder. Councilmembers Roland Barrera and Mark Scott voted against the resolution, while Mayor Paulette Guajardo abstained from voting; this demonstrates exactly where they stand with taxpayers.

Mayor Guajardo, Councilmen Barrera and Scott, had every opportunity to lead, bring clarity, and make a decision that serves the public. The public was promised real leadership and these elected officials have failed to deliver results or communicate a clear path forward. “Common sense decisions require common sense leadership. It doesn’t get any more common sense than this,” continued Henry.

The prolonged indecision has raised serious concerns about local government accountability and respect for the public’s time and resources. Henry urges local leaders to put the public interest ahead of political posturing and to move forward with clarity and purpose. The City of Corpus Christi is facing a $7M budget deficit. If the city isn’t willing to take the $20M from Henry, will this burden be passed to taxpayers?

“Taxpayers deserve honest answers and swift action. This is not just about politics—it’s about responsible governance!”
