3 Killed, 1 Injured in SUV, Semi Crash in Indiana
An SUV rear-ended a semi tractor trailer along I-65 in Jasper County, Indiana on Monday night, killing three people and injuring another, according to ABC News 7.
Details of the Fatal SUV crash
According to initial reports, the deadly crash happened about an hour after a tanker had rolled over, causing a chemical spill.
- Around 10:40 p.m. a semi tanker carrying nitric acid rolled over on I-65 near Route 10. Indiana State Police say no one was injured in the accident.
- An hour later, a semi slowed to approach the accident and was rear-ended by a 2008 Toyota Sequoia.
- The driver of the Sequoia and two of his children were killed in the crash. A third child was airlifted to a nearby hospital to be treated for injuries sustained in the collision.
Police say the driver was Dr. Mallik Chaganti, 45 of Rensselaer, Indiana. The children killed have only been identified as a boy and girl.
The driver of the semi, whose identity has not been released, was uninjured in the accident. Authorities are investigating the crash but say alcohol and drugs are not suspected factors.

The Indiana State Police provide the following auto accident statistics.
- In 2011 there were 674 fatal collisions resulting in 749 deaths in the state of the Indiana.
- 19.4% of those collisions were speed-related.
- Approximately 2.3% (4,309) collisions in 2011 occurred in a work zone.
- The economic cost of collisions in 2011 was nearly $4.4 billion.
