11-Year-Old Boy Killed in East Texas School Bus Crash

An 11-year-old boy was killed Monday afternoon when a school bus was struck by a pickup in Shelby County, Texas.

Details of the Fatal School Bus Crash

According to KTRE, the fatal crash occurred around 4 pm Monday.

Preliminary reports indicate the Shelby ISD school bus was turning right from FM 139 onto CR 2552 when it was struck from behind by a 1997 Dodge pickup. The collision caused the school bus to overturn, killing the 11-year-old boy.

Several other students were injured in the accident, and a helicopter was staged near the crash site at the Ephesus Baptist Church. The helicopter left the scene by 6:15 pm.

An eye witness told reporters that the bus was stopped at the intersection with its flashers on before the crash occurred. The accident remains under investigation.

  • Of the 1,344 fatalities, only 8 percent were occupants of school transportation vehicles.
  • Most (71%) of the people who lost their lives in these crashes were occupants of other vehicles involved in the crashes.
  • Nonoccupants, including pedestrians, bicyclists, etc., accounted for 21 percent of the fatalities.
  • Among the 106 occupants killed in school transportation vehicles between 2004 and 2013, 45 were drivers and 61 were passengers.
