25 Killed in Drunk Driving Crashes in Corpus Christi in 2020

The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) recorded 25 drunk driving-related deaths in Corpus Christi and nearby communities in 2020. Another 76 people were seriously injured.

TxDOT Looks to Curb Drunk Driving Crashes and Fatalities

KIII-TV reports TxDOT is working to reduce instances of drunk driving as 25 DWI-related fatalities were reported in the agency’s Corpus Christi district, which includes Aransas, Bee, Goliad, Jim Wells, Karnes, Kleberg, Live Oak, Nueces, Refugio, and San Patricio counties.

In a new campaign, Driver Sober. No Regrets., TxDOT is calling on Texans to drink responsibly and prevent accidents related to drunk driving. The campaign comes just in time for football season.

“Fall football is a time-honored tradition in our state, but one regrettable decision to drink and drive could turn game day into jail time or a deadly crash,” said TxDOT Executive Director Marc Williams. ”Whether fans are  tailgating with friends or celebrating their team’s big win, we want everyone to enjoy the season responsibly.”

TxDOT reports a person dies in an alcohol-related crash in Texas every nine hours and six minutes. Last year alone, 963 people were killed in alcohol-related crashes in Texas with an additional 2,114 being seriously injured.

In Corpus Christi, TxDOT recorded 580 DUI-alcohol crashes resulting in 25 deaths and 76 serious injuries.

Preventing Drunk Driving Accidents in Texas

TxDOT reminds drivers that all drunk driving crashes and deaths are 100% preventable. From designated drivers to taxis and rideshare services, there is no excuse for getting behind the wheel intoxicated.

The Drive Sober. No Regrets. will involve outreach events at college campuses across Texas that will include video exhibits and testimonials of Texans who have been affected by drunk driving accidents. The stories will also be available at www.facesofdrunkdriving.com.

The latest campaign is part of a larger TxDOT project call #EndTheStreakTX which promotes safe driving behaviors across the board.

The last deathless day on Texas roadways was November 7, 2020.
