SunSetter has recalled more than 200,000 units of vinyl retractable awning covers for a malfunction that causes the awning to spring open with enough force to cause severe injury or death.

About the SunSetter Awning Covers Recall

The recall involves all soft vinyl awning covers used with SunSetter motorized awnings sold with bungee tie-down between June 1999 and January 2019.

According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, the SunSetter vinyl awning covers, if activated while cover is in use, can unexpectedly open with enough force to cause severe injury or death when the cover is removed.

So far, the SPSC has received 14 reports of incidents involving the awnings. Six of those reports included injuries and one included the death of a 73-year-old man who was struck by the motorized awning unexpectedly while removing the cover’s bungee tie-downs.

Covers for manually operated awnings are not affected by this recall.

Repairs for the Recalled SunSetter Awning Covers

Consumers should not attempt to install covers for the motorized awnings. They should also refrain from removing any previously installed covers unless they cautiously follow the instructions provided on the SunSetter website. Consumers can contact SunSetter to receive free breakaway safety clips to replace the faulty bungee tie-downs provided with the recalled cover.
