8-Year-Old Girl Dies in ATV Accident
According to Fox 4 Kansas City, an 8-year-old girl died in an ATV accident after a 9-year-old girl crashes the ATV on its side.
Details of the Fatal ATV Accident
Alexis Walker, 8, of Leavenworth, Kansas, was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident.
A report of the crash says the 9-year-old driver lost control of the ATV and ejected Walker after overcorrecting the vehicle, says Fox 4 Kansas City. The child driving the ATV was taken to a hospital in St. Joseph with serious injuries.
The crash occurred around noon on Monday in Andrew County, Missouri, along Highway 136, two and a half miles north of Highway 48, says Fox 4 Kansas City.
ATV Injury and Fatality Statistics
According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC),
- 385 ATV-related fatalities occurred in 2014.
- From 1982 to 2014, 23 percent of the total number of reported ATV-related fatalities were of children younger than 16 years of age.
- In 2014, there were an estimated 93,700 ATV-related, emergency department-treated injuries in the United States.
- An estimated 26 percent of these involved children younger than 16 years of age.
