The fatal collision occurred around 7:00 a.m. local time in the 3800 block of Frederick Avenue in the southwest part of the city. The school bus traveled eastbound when it crashed into a Mustang and a pillar off the road before entering oncoming traffic.
Media sources say the school bus smashed through the driver’s side of the commuter bus, tearing off part of the MTA bus’s side. Nearby witnesses say the collision shook the ground.
Two people, and no children, were on the school bus at the time of the accident, including the driver and an aide. The driver of the bus died in the accident. The driver was on the way to pick up children when the collision occurred. The aide on the bus sustained injuries.
According to media reports, there were 13 people on the MTA commuter bus. Five people on the bus died in the crash. At least ten people were reported injured in the fatal collision, including the school bus aide, the driver of the Mustang, and eight occupants on the MTA bus.
Police say they cannot speculate on the cause of the crash but they do not believe there is any foul play involved.
